The fast depletion of fossil fuel has paved the way for the emergence of cogeneration technology in several process industries. Already cogeneration plants with cement, sugar and textile industries have been very successful. Presently there is no cogeneration plant coupled with modern rice mill and it yields large amount of rice husk as a by-product, which can be used efficiently as a fuel for the production of steam for both power and process. In this paper a detailed feasibility study for incorporation of cogeneration plant in modern rice mill is done. The present study has been made with reference to 50 tons capacity of paddy processing modern rice mill. The various processes of modern rice mill have been studied and selection of turbine and boiler for a modern rice mill is recommended. The steam requirements in terms of quantity, pressure, temperature and mass flow rate of processing of paddy is also evaluated for the integrated cogeneration plant. The flow diagram of cogeneration plant with process sequence and inlet and outlet conditions of steam in various stages has been worked out. It is observed from the cost analysis that the cogeneration with modern rice mill will also reduce the working cost of the plant.
