Mahi weir is proposed to be constructed as a tidal regulator cum recharge structure to prevent surface salinity ingress as well as to recharge the surrounding land. Sub-soil investigation was carried out for Mahi Weir to ascertain stratification, hardness, denseness of strata, and physical and engineering properties of soil at different levels and to get bearing capacity values. In all, 9 bore holes, 4 on abutment sides and 5 on river bed were drilled. The sample collection was carried out under submerged condition. The paper discusses sub-soil investigation, field and laboratory tests carried out to obtain the true bearing capacity and settlement values at given depth and the difficulties experienced during the fieldwork.
