Hydropower is known to be a least polluting, renewable and cheap source of energy. However, during construction and operational phase hydro project may also lead to some changes in the surrounding environment which may be beneficial or adverse. By proper planning of the project at the inception and design stages and by adopting appropriate mitigatory measures in the planning, design, construction and operation phases, the adverse impacts can be minimized to a large extent, where as the beneficial impacts could be maximized. The present paper deals with main issues of the Environmental Impact Assessment study in order to assess its positive and negative impacts likely to accrue as a results of the construction and operation of the Sewa-II Hydroelectric Power Project in J & K.
