Abstract

The present paper presents computation of boundary layer parameters i.e. flow loss coefficient and the head loss is made over a blade profile. In this present paper Thwaite's method for laminar boundary layer and improved entrainment method for turbulent boundary layer has been used. The axial turbine blade is divided in to ten sections and head loss on each section had been computed. Finally the average head loss over the blade has been computed. Flow loss coefficient and the head loss due to friction drag over the blade is computed using the value of total momentum thickness at the trailing edge. The required calculations were done by using a software program. In the earlier days computation of boundary layer parameters was a very tedious job, but now a days it has become convenient due to development of numerical methods with computer applications. By using a software program the computation of Momentum thickness, Flow loss coefficient and head loss over a given blade profile has been done at ten different sections. From these values the average head loss was computed. For the calculation of above parameters, input data are distance along blade profile(s), uniform velocity (U) and dU/ds for both suction and pressure surfaces. Then the laminar momentum thickness and turbulent momentum thickness are obtained by Thwait's method and head's improved entrained respectively.
