The paper highlights the concept of sustainable development and its requirement in the present scenario. It presents the major benefits the hydropower when it is developed in an economically viable environmentally sound and in socially responsible manner. The paper gives a brief descriptive role of NHPC especially Region-II that is looking after the projects on the Ravi Basin in H.P. in the sustainable development of the area of its functioning as a whole.
