Abstract

Construction of Civil Engineering structures in Protected Areas (PA) and forests is one of the major root cause of fragmentation and shrinkage of major wildlife habitats as well as hindrances to local foraging and migratory movement of wild Asian elephants. The paper presents the problems faced by the wild Asian elephants due to the construction of Chilla Hydro-electric Project in Rajaji National Park in Uttaranchal, India, a world famous habitat of Wild Asian Elephants. The paper suggests the guidelines for the improvement in the structural/ecological design of various elements so that the migratory route of elephants can be restored, there by restoring the lost continuity between the fragmented habitats of elephants.
