For many parts of the world, sediment management is widely recognised as a key aspect in the design and operation of hydropower schemes. With reference to case studies, this paper aims to highlight some of the challenges faced by the hydropower engineer in the design of appropriate sediment management systems for both run-of-the-river and reservoir storage schemes. The paper focuses on sediment management in South Asia, although many of the design aspects discussed are more widely applicable.
