Himalayan rivers carry heavy load of sediments during snowmelt and monsoon season with high percentage of quartz in many. Since there are number of high-head power plants located in these rivers, serious problems through erosion of turbine runners and under water parts is being faced by run-of-the-river projects. Removal of a considerable proportion of these sediments before the water finds entry into the water conductor is, therefore, of prime concern in such projects. Nathpa-Jhakri Project, located on river Satluj, is high head run-of-the-river scheme and with provision of a well-designed desilting arrangement, substantial quantity of sediment load is being eliminated. The efficiency of the system for sediment removal has been ascertained out during operation stage and compares favorably with the one envisaged on the hydraulic model.
