Abstract

Electrical utilities are increasingly required to operate their networks more efficiently and to reduce the total real running costs of equipment. The most economical solutions are often in contradiction with locally approved traditional methods. This paper deals with current practices being followed in India in selection and purchase of distribution transformers. It discusses economic transformer procurement and use practices that, if followed, will result in better financial circumstances for India's utilities and better service to end users. It discusses typical transformer lives, transformer quality and loading criteria and total owning cost vs. lowest first cost purchase practices.
