The power sector in India has grown 94 times in relation to the generation capacity from 1350 MW in 1947 to 127,673 MW in Jan. 2007. The thermal power generation has a major share for such an increase. However for the last decade Indian power sector is facing the capacity shortage. Table No. 1, presents the Power supply position in India for the last ten years. Present power shortage in India is an issue of concern as it hampers the economic growth adversely. The Maharashtra state power scenario is worse. Except Mumbai and Pune, the rest of Maharashtra is suffering from heavy load shedding round the year. Tata Power Company provides supply in Mumbai city. CII came forward so as to reduce/remove load shedding in Pune city and to encourage captive power generation from industrial (i) Selectivity, (ii) Sensitivity, (iii) Discrimination & (iv) sector. The additional power of 100 MW generated in Speed are maintained. Add to this, the problems in Pune zone helped the state electricity distribution company to ease out the problem of power shortage for Pune city and increased the comfort level of all customers though with some additional charge of Rs. 0.42 per kWh only for non-subsidized consumers. Power scenario in the rest of Maharashtra except Mumbai is presented in the paper.
