Abstract

IEC 61850 a new standard for new communications for connecting devices from different suppliers, cater to present and future installations, integrating engineering information from different tools from different manufacturers, new communication technologies with existing applications, Distributed architecture for Substation Automation, optimization of bay level hardware, cost saving through reduced engineering and utilizing the multifunctional features at bay level for Protection, Control and Monitoring. The key objective of this paper is to bring out the advantages of using IEC 61850 typically in EHV substations in terms of reduction in number of standard hardwired panels thus saving cost, floor space, complexity of wiring, ongoing maintenance testing costs and to bring out the practical use of this standard, offering high degree of flexibility, fulfilling operational requirements, standardizing communications. The conclusion will be made that with IEC 61850 as the latest approach for Substation Automation typically for EHV substation which can bring many advantages to the user like Reduced Engineering at Bay level, Interoperability, reduction in the number of cubicles, No complexity of wiring and Future Proof.
