The paper will address new methods of fast discriminatory protection to detect and react quickly to changes in the power system that operates today more and more nearer to the stability limits. In particular, it described a novel technique with fuzzy logic algorithms applied for detection of topology change, and predictive detection of out-of-step conditions both from the grid and source perspective. Combined with fast load shedding techniques, these solutions enable better control of system stability, allow optimization of commitments for generation scheduling and transmission use, enable better reserve utilization and support the utilities’ operational and financial objectives.
