125. Networked Meters: Ultimate Solution for Utilities

In the past decade we have seen major changes in the structure of the erstwhile monolithic State Electricity Boards. Today, we see the distribution sector divided into smaller more accountable entities. To what extent the loss reduction can be attributed to the tamper resistant energy meter is therefore debatable. However, everyone would agree that by concentrating solely on making the meter more and more tamper-resistant, would not yield results beyond a certain point. This is essentially due to the busbar nature of the distribution system that can be tapped to pilfer energy before the metering point and without detection. Technology has now given us the edge whereby one can take a re-look at the energy meter from a different perspective, and change both the approach and strategy to fight tampering and pilferage. More importantly, under the new approach, the consumer can also be guided to change inefficient habits and help the Utilities in operating their system more efficiently. In this paper we take a look at the concept of a Networked meter as the ultimate solution for the complex problems of the Utilities that also concerns the consumers, regulators as well as the government.
