Water Pollution: A Case Study of Water Quality of Bhima Sub-Basin in Maharashtra State

The concept of water quality management of available surface water is an important and obligatory as it is the fundamental resource to all socio-economic development and maintaining healthy ecosystem. Due to urbanization and consequent increase in population, intensification of agriculture (no-point source pollution), growth of chemical and sugar factories, there is having considerable impact on quality of water resources particularly when it is coupled with inadequate sewage collection and treatment. Degradation of water quality near metropolitan cities like Pune, Mumbai, Sangli, Kolhapur and Nashik is the major cause of water pollution problems in Maharashtra state. The present paper describes the water quality study of Bhima sub-basin in Maharashtra state, which has been carried out by Hydrology project (SW) Maharashtra, for the years (2003 to 2007), to know the suitability for irrigation use and for different purposes and remedial measures thereon. The paper includes Water Quality data analysed in Maharashtra for 8hima Sub-basin, which covers observation of baseline water quality, trends in water quality changes & physio-chemical measurements. It also consists of different variables grouped according to water quality issues facingin this basin & major Hot spots identified in Bhima Basin. It also highlighted probable reasons behind pollution and some remedial measures to forth come the problems in future. The findings of the paper will play a vital role in creating awareness regarding water quality in Bhima Sub-Basin.
