Potential Use of Brine Water Resources in Coastal Aquifers of Tamil Nadu, India

Special studies on evaluation of Brine Water Resources has been carried out by Central Ground Water Board, Chennai in coastal sedimentary tract of Tamil Nadu as the demand for highly concentrated Brine water is very high. Eighteen Exploratory wells and eleven Observation wells had been drilled. Highly concentrated Brine water aquifers have been delineated and established the vertical profile of brine concentration all along the coast. Geophysical borehole logging an indispensable tool in the process of scientific exploration for ground water, has supplemented the information in depicting the surface geology and for adopting cement sealing techniques. Chemical analysis results of Brine water reveal the origin of brine is in-situ in nature. The values of chemical constituents of brine water are double or triple the values of chemical constituents of natural seawater. This feature infers its in-situ nature. Areas suitable for development of aquaculture and marine chemical industries are demarcated.
