Dependability and Security Evaluation of Adaptive Fault Location Algorithm of Transmission Line Protection With Synchronised Phasor Measurement

Abstract

Now a day, the Synchronised Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is considered to be one of the most important measuring device in the power systems. It is possible to measure all the phasors at one location in the power system simultaneously with advances in satellite based time-keeping systems, computer technology and communication system. Based on this synchronized phasor measurement, an adaptive transmission line protection algorithm was developed. In ths paper, the security and dependability evaluation of the fault detection/location algorithm has been carried out. The MATLAB was used to simulate high voltage transmission line with various faults at various locations. The dependability of this algorithm has been checked with various fault locations, fault resistances, fault incidence angle, VAR shunt compensation, error in synchronized data etc. it has been observed that fault location is within 3% error for various conditions except in unsynchronized data with fast fault detection. By creating fault other than PMU located line, the security of fault location algorithm was checked and it has been observed that for faults other than synchronized PMU line, algorithm is not considered as fault. Hence 100% security is obtained.
