Unwanted operation of Protection Systems has always been a nightmare for the Protection Engineers, world over. Indian Power System also has not been any different, though in India, we have been significantly more accommodating towards such events, probably due to the multitude of more pressing concerns. Yet some such events resulting in massive disruptions have always made us sit up and take stock of the situation. One such event, which had a hitherto unprecedented extent of outage, did occur at NTPC Talcher (Kaniha) Super Thermal Power Station on 25.03.2006.
