Abstract

CWREDSS is a decision support system that was developed to provide demand based water release strategies for reducing gap between canal supplies and demands and there by increasing the water use efficiency. This developed CWREDSS was applied to Guvvalagudem major distributary of the Nagarjunasagar Left Canal, Andhra Pradesh, India and evaluated for Its ability to develop releases, reduce the gap between demand and supplies and help the user to take appropriate decision for efficient utilization of canal water. This system was used to develop the canal releases under different cropping pattern, groundwater use and rainfall situation of the selected canal command area. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the DSS for canal water releases (CWREDSS) is capable of developing releases under different cropping pattern, different ground water use situations and different rainfall probability levels of the command area. CWREDSS can also be used to determine most suitable cropping pattern for efficient utilization of the water resources of a canal command area. CWREDSS can also be used for other command areas of south India with out any modification and command areas of North India with minor modification. This DSS will help for planning, operation and management of irrigation systems.
