The position of wind turbine installations in the power system structure is changing, hand-in-hand, with the massive increase in installed wind power capacity. In the 80’s and 90’s wind turbines were treated as small local power sources that were of negligible importance from a power system point of view. The stochastic nature of wind raised certain reluctance on the part of utility companies to introduce a power source with unknown behaviour, and said to be a “potential troublemaker”.
Nowadays, thousands of megawatts of wind power, which are de-centralised and spread over large extensions are integrated to the grid. Thus, wind power cannot be treated as an “unimportant” power source any more - since it represents a higher fraction of the total power system installed capacity.
