Availability of adequate power in various parts of the country is an essential pre-requisite to a large programme of industrialisation and economic betterment. The power supply industry calls for a continuous and expanding programme. The shortage of power supply in India has been a matter of concern during the last few years. A detailed study of the subject with a view to formulating a definite approach to a long-term plan has become a matter of urgency. This paper is a very preliminary, and possibly the first exercise on the subject based on limited data now available and is intended to focus attention on certain broad aspects of the problem on which further work and studies should proceed.
