Abstract

Electrical method has been applied to investigate the uplift pressure in and below the body of a concrete or masonry dam. For a suitable range of the ratio between the depth of the Grout cut-off and height of a dam selected as 0.2 to 0-5 from the cases of most of the existing dams in U.S.A., the effect of a Grout cut-off on reduction in uplift pressure below the base of the dam was investigated for two cases of the ratios of permeability of concrete to foundation material say 1 : 8 and 1 : 10. Then the effect of the change in the ratio of permeability of concrete to foundation material (range between 1 : 2 to l : ∞) on the distribution of uplift pressure when there is a Grout out-off, was investigated.

Later the various measures for Foundation Treatment such as Grout cut-off, Gallery and Drain were tested for a case with a fixed ratio of the permeability of concrete or masonry to that of the foundation material with the object of finding out the individual and combined effect of these measures in reducing uplift intensity at the base of the dam. The series of experiments were repeated for an other ratio of permeability of the concrete to the foundation material to confirm the findings.
