A few methods of computation of ’silt factor’ are outli>ted and their relative merits compared. Variation in particle size characteristics of river bed silts have been studied based on which a method of computation of mean sdl factor from bed level has been outlined for uses in Lacey’s formula of maximum probable scour in alluvial river beds.
