Abstract

The study relates to the vertical distribution of mean velocity in a turbulent open channel. Townsend (1) has obtained equations for turbulent flows in pipes and channels, where the flow occurs between rigid boundaries and the hydrostatic pressure does not come into play. The present paper uses the same method as Townsend and gives velocity distributions for two cases—(i) when the entire flow is governed by a single law; (ii) when the flows near the boundary and away from the boundary follow different laws. Both cases have been found to yield parabolic distributions, the latter being more accurate. Comparison with available experimental data shows good agreement.
