Abstract

This paper deals with the development of rational formulae for turbulent flow in open channels. From the basic equations of turbulent flow in open channels as given by Garbis H. Keulegan(1) and using the classical experimental results of Ralph W. Powell(2) a set of rational formulae have been derived for smooth turbulent, transition turbulent and rough turbulent flows. A new criterion, has been evolved for describing (fully developed) rough turbulent flow in open channels. Ultra-rapid flow in open channels has been briefly dealt with. Manning’s formula has been critically analysed and a new conversion formula has been presented for obtaining the equivalent sand roughness from, Manning’s rugosity coefficient.
