A thorough knowledge of the deformability of the foundation is very desirable for the design of large structures like dams, pressure tunnels, bridges, etc. The various methods of determining the elastic constants of the foundation rock is described, emphasising the necessity of large scale field tests. Necessary explanations of the formulae used in the interpretation of the field results are also provided.
