Chute spillways are generally adopted for earth dams or for dams over which it is impossible or undesirable for special reasons to pass floods. Design standards for the various component parts of such a spillway are reviewed and discussed. The details of design of five chute spillways for earth dams in the Mysore State based on the practices discussed are given. The model studies which helped to finalise the design with important modifications are described.
