In the design of the free-board of an earth dam wave upsurge is the primary factor to be considered. By controlling the wave upsurge economy can be affected by reducing the free-board and hence the height of the dam. A new device, called the wave deflector, for controlling the wave upsurge is introduced in this paper. The scope of the present paper is restricted to evolving the optimum inclination, size and position of wave deflectors to be used in reservoirs with upstream slopes of 1½ to 1 and 2 to 1. The experiments are conducted in a glass walled steel flume on sectional models with the help of a suitable wave generator designed for the purpose. The results are presented in the form of non-dimensional plots to be of general applicability in future designs.
