This paper presents a rational solution for analysing the effect of air-entrainment on stilling basin performance. The flow equation of the so-called “Pre-entrained Jump” has been developed based on the recently established theory of aerated flows. This equation has been solved using the esperimental of Straub and Anderson. Based on these results, it has been shown that the present practice of designing hydraulic jump stilling basins, based on model studies, with no simulation of air-entrainment, is quite satisfactory, if an allowance of 10 per cent of additional sequent depth is provided.
