Consumers’ demands everywhere are growing, sometimes on exponential scale. This would suggest stepping up of system capacity at all levels—generation, transmission, and distribution. The first two have received adequate treatment. This paper seeks to draw attention of the Power Engineers to the field of distribution, the need to rationalisation and stepping up of the present static level to 22—33 kV., and to their examining the prospects of better performance and economies at the higher levels. Himachal Pradesh adopted 22 kV. in line with practices of several western countries for distribution in their difficult rural areas and found this level very adequate for. dealing with small loads, distributed over large distances, most economically.
