Abstract

In high head, multi-purpose, storage reservoirs, a dual control with an emergency gate and a service gate, for regulating the outflow, is employed. The high velocity flow particularly at incremental gate openings under high heads leads to very serious problems of cavitation, erosion, hydraulic downpull and severe vibrations of gates. In order to avoid dangers caused by vibration, elaborate tests need be carried out to know the influence of surrounding water and forces of under-flou on the gates for establishing remedial measures. In this paper, vibration tests on models of Jet Flow Gate (provided in the Bhakra Dam) and Emergency Gate have been discussed.
