The stress conditions in a circular arch of uniform thickness subjected to a uniformly distributed radial load are briefly explained and a dimensionless ‘stress factor’ is defined. The influence of the variables affecting the stress factors are then discussed. Charts are provided to estimate the values of the stress factors, which would enable easy determination of the maximum stresses in an arch. The use of the stress charts to restrict the maximum stress to a prescribed value is explained with an example.
