The paper reviews the existing literature on aseismic design of earth dams and discusses the basis and limitations of conventional design procedures. Modifications leading to safer design have been suggested. A method has been given for applying response spectra of single mass system to distributed mass system in earth dam. Practical considerations leading to earthquake resistant dengn of earth dam have also been indicated.
