In this paper, factors contributing to the uncertainty in the value of foundation modulus have been presented, the effect of this uncertainty on the stress computations of a beam on elastic foundation discussed, and a suggestion for arriving at a safe design of barrage rafts under a possible range of variation of foundation modulus has been advanced.
