Abstract

For certain topographical conditions it becomes necessary to construct a portion of a gravity dam partly on rock and partly on a sloping concrete strut. The analysis of such a structure by conventional methods presents several difficulties.

Based on the results of certain photoelastic tests and the theory of beams on elastic foundations, a method of analysing section of gravity dams founded partly on rock and partly on concrete strut has been proposed. The method is illustrated by an example of the proposed section of the Barapani Dam in Assam (India). Design data has been compiled in the form of graphs to enable the designers to rapidly determine the stresses in similar sections for various types of rocks.
