The discharge characteristics of sliding gates on level floors under free flow as well as partially submerged conditions were studied in a flume. The variation of coefficient of discharge under these conditions has been studied with reference to pertinent parameters. A unique relationship between the ratio of submerged to free coefficient of discharge and submergence factor of the jump in the rear channel has been observed. A design chart has been presented.
