An empirical relation between the average rainfall and the areal extent of storm rainfall in the Mahanadi Catchment has been derived and tested on a set of 25 rainstorms which were not used in the derivation of this relation. A relation for obtaining the monthly (monsoon months), seasonal (monsoon period) and the annual averages of rainfall from the point rainfall recorded at Balandapara has been derived and the water potential of the catchment has been calculated for standard return periods. Regression equations for estimating the monthly rainfall at Balandapara, during the monsoon period have been worked out.
