Abstract

The Linganamakki Earth Dam on Sharavathi River is the first earth dam wherein instruments have been fixed in the Mysore State. The maximum height of the earth dam from the deepest foundation is 170 ft. (51.8 m.). The construction of this dam took over 4 seasons to complete and involved placing of 1000 lakh cu. ft. (28.3 lakh cu, m.) of selected earth in addition to rockfill of 400 lakh cu. ft. (11.3 lakh cu. m.). The filling operations of the. reservoir were started in July 1964 and the reservoir was filled partially during 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons. The observations made regarding the settlement, and pore pressure development during these periods are graphically presented and discussed. The dam is behaving as intended and has shown no signs of distress. The performance of the dam is satisfactory.
