The Soviet Union possesses a vast amount of natural water resources. The development of water resources since 1917, after the Great October Revolution, started with construction of multi-purpose projects on the rivers and the progress achieved in the country in the field of designing and constructing various earth and rockfill dams during the course of this development, has been presented. While preparing the article, data given in the album: “Large Bams of the U.S.S.R.” as well as magazines: “Hydrotechni-cal Construction” for the period 1961—1966, were used.
