Abstract

Lightning is the cause of the most of interruptions in high voltage transmission lines. In view of the almost unpredictable nature of lightning and the various local factors, no set rules can be laid down for protection of transmission lines against lightning. Each line has to be tackled individually and most economic protective measures adopted on merits. This paper sets out and discusses in detail the various factors involved in the lightning protection of transmission lines. A correct appraisal of all these factors is necessary to strike the most economic solution.

A brief review of the experience on the lightning performance of transmitsion lines and the practices adopted for achieving satisfactory lightning performance of the lines in U.S.S.R., Japan, Germany, Britain and U.S.A., etc., has also been given.
