Abstract

The acute expanding boundary curvatures in a stilling basin lead to the formation of unsymmetrical standing wave which, in turn, causes pulsations. These pulsations erode the sandy banks of the canal downstream. Model studies were conducted, for flows covering Froude No. range from 2 to 3, to dampen pulsations of flow and, in result, a device known as “Wave Suppressor” was evolved. This, when provided slightly below the maximum water-level in the stilling basin, controlled the undulating flow, remarkably.

The device has proved efficacious in case of many outlet sluices in Uttar Pradesh. Design criteria for the Wave Suppressor is presented in the paper.
