Analytical study of mass oscillations in surge systems of hydro-electric plants generally involves lengthy computations. Hani computations or graphical methods can be used for checking only a few design alternatives. However, extensive studies are possible on a digital as well as on an analogue computer, each mode of solution having its own advantages. Suitable computer programmes have been developed and used to examine, as a specific case, the Sabarigiri (Pamba) Project surge system. Surges under various turbine operation conditions have been studied.
