Abstract

This article covers various aspects of layout and designs adopted for Ramganga ‘Power Station. Unconventional arrangements have been adopted, where necessary, maintaining stress on economy, ease of handling, and efficient operation of the plant and equipment. Main features are :—

(i) Application of Rihand Model Tests to predict performance characteristics of Ramganga machines resulting in, most appropriate turbine setting, and additional peaking support to the Western U.P. Power System, without incurring extra expenditure on water conduit system or turbines.

(ii) Reduction of 0.72 m. in turbine-generator shaft length.

(iiii) Reduction of 1.5 m, in power station height by using split erection bay which is 12 m. below maximum flood level.

(iv) Horizontal shaft butterfly valves.

(v) Reduction in 11 kV. generator-transformer connections by shifting 75 MVA 11/143 kV. transformers from outdoor switchyard at El. 278.59 m. to turbine floor at, El. 260.60 m.
