A rational approach to the, problem of prediction of discharge over a contracted weir is presented in this paper. Based: on the assumption that the energy correction factor for the flow upstream of a weir is unity and using the Von Mises contraction coefficients for a two-dimensional slot a relation is developed for the discharge coefficient of contracted weirs. This relation has been used to calculate the ‘effective’ width of contracted weirs for Carter’s experimental data. The effective width has been related empirically to the width of (he weir. Ihe width of the approach channel and the head over the weir. The relation ships evolved in this paper enable prediction of the discharge over contracted and suppressed weirs to an accuracy of ± 4 per cent.
