Abstract

Sheet files are commonly employed in the construction of weirs and barrages on permeable foundations to reduce uplift pressure under the structure and to secure safe exit gradient. Nevertheless the sheet piles increase the stability of the structure against sliding, The lateral resistance offered by the sheet pile depends upon the moment of resistance of the pile section and its depth. The distribution of pressure on a sheet pile along its depth may be according to a curved line or a straight line. A set of curves showing relationship) between maximum bending moment (Moment of Resistance of the Pile Section), penetration depth, d, and the lateral resistance of the sheet pile are developed in this paper.
