Civil engineers are involved in the design of drainage and flood control systems, Estimation and control of floods is an important part of their activity. This paper briefly reviews the various approaches to the estimation of floods and their limitations. Simulta-tion analysis is explained briefly. It is shown to be a versatile tool in the estimation of the stochastic characteristics of floods, and in the optimal design of water resources systems including flood control systems. The advantages and limitations of simulation analysis are also mentioned.
