In a developing country finance is the greatest handicap for development. The gap is further aggravated by deficiency in technological advancement or by conservatism to proven and costly means. While speed is the need of the hour, rate of development thus gets actually retarded. To accelerate, cost of new construction has to be cut to the minimum. This can be achieved not only by adopting technological advancements in other countries, but also by devising further improvements in design to suit local conditions. In power systems another all-pervading essential for economy is the obligation of the utility to supply power to the consumer at the lowest possible cost. Transmission lines are vital arteries of power systems and consume a major portion of the outlays. In recent years there has been spectacular advancements in transmission technology in many other countries, but the position in India has been more or less static. There is a vast scope for effecting economy in cost of transmission lines by introducing new techniques. An attempt has been made in this paper to bring these into focus.
