Abstract

The use of a simple, cheap and locally fabricated screened evaporimeter is demonstrated in a trial conducted to estimate consumptive use of high yielding dwarf wheat variety, Sharbati Sonora, under the climatic conditions at Kanpur. It is shown that an evaporimeter fitted with a mesh screen of 4x 20 size gave good correlation with the consumptive use estimated by regular soil moisture estimations. The evapotranspiration calculated by Blaney-Criddle formula during the crop season gave a higher value than the experimentally determined figure. The value of ‘K’ was found to be 0.619 in the present study. It is concluded that the screened evaporimeters with appropriate size of mesh can be used conveniently for finding out the water use by wheat.
