This paper deals with the influence of the introduction of horizontal sand drains in the upstream body of an earth dam on the reduction of drawdown yore water pressures and consequent improvement of the stability of upstream slopes in earth dams.
The two unique design cases in our country, Tenughat Dam (Bihar) and Tawa Dam (M.P.), wherein horizontal sand layers have been introduced in the upstream casing ; as no relatively pervious materials were available within economical leads for use as casing materials, have been discussed.
