This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of the load demand patterns of some of the power systems in India and discusses the various factors influencing the utilization of the available diversity. There is sufficient evidence of the existence of usable diversity between the load patterns of various power systems in the country; however, for full exploitation of the benefits available from this diversity, it would be necessary to collect and analyse considerable data over an extended period of time and also to find ways and means of utilizing the diversity through the regional and inter-regional coordination between the power systems.
