Abstract

After the advont of independence, there has been a great activity in the building of dams in the country to conserve and utilise the water resources for the benefit of the people. Earth dams of moderate heights built in ancient times are still functioning today. Rapid advances in Soil Mechanics, evolution of better techniques for analysis and testing of materials and improvements in earth moving machinery have enabled the construction of earth dams of unprecedented heights and volume in much shorter time. The article describes the salient problems encountered during the design and construction of some of tho high earth dams and also the mathods adopted for their solution.
